More about William L. Richter
As a child, William Louis Richter, the son of German immigrants, was apprenticed to a baker in Virginia. As he got older, he moved to Fredericksburg, Texas where he opened his first bakery. Unfortunately, it was not successful. In 1879 he relocated to San Antonio and worked as a pastry chef for Menger Hotel while also working nights at Solcher's Bakery. He met his wife at Solcher's, the daughter of the owner, and married her in 1882 and opened the first Richter's Bakery in San Antonio in the same year. He expanded his business when he purchased the Butter Krust franchise in 1912.
Along with his sons. he entered the pastor business by forming Colonial Cakes in 1925. They baked and distributed their own cakes and became the second largest shipper in San Antonio. Richter passed away in the year 1940 but a year later, the bakery in San Antonio moved to Broadway street with updated machinery for mass production, and, in 1964, expanded to Austin and here in Corpus Christi.
Georgia-based industry Flower Industries got ownership of all Richter's Bakeries, including Butter Krust and Colonial Cakes factories. In 1997, all of the Richter's Bakery cooperations were dissolved.
